Revista Brasileira de Economia (RBE) is Brazil's oldest publication on Economics and the second oldest in Latin America. It was founded by Arizio de Viana, the first editor, and Eugênio Gudin, one of the most influential economists in Brazilian history. RBE was introduced in its first issue by professor Luiz Simões Lopes. His introduction is so up-to-date that it could be part of any issue of the journal today. Professor Lopes described the essence of the scientific line of research and of academic requirements, which serve as RBE's cornerstone until today:
"Revista Brasileira de Economía fills a gap in the publication of papers on economic themes in Brazil. Its major goal is to analyze these themes under scientific, theoretical and applied aspects. It is a non-profit journal. Being totally devoted to promoting research, improvement in higher education and objective and impartial debate, it is free of any doctrinal or political influences... Whenever possible, the major topics will be published with their respective abstracts in foreign languages in order to facilitate a desirable and auspicious intellectual exchange with peers from other countries."
