Industrial ecology is a rapidly growing field that systematically examines local, regional, and global materials, and energy flows in products, processes, industrial sectors, and economies. It focuses on the potential role of industry in reducing environmental burdens throughout the product life cycle from the extraction of raw materials, to the production of goods, to the use of those goods and to the management of the resulting wastes.
Types of papers include : a Forum section with papers related to the policy and strategic implications of industrial ecology as well as the conceptual development of the field; a Research and Analysis section with subjects on analyses of material flows, life cycle design, impacts or management, assessment of environmental improvement through technological change, development of industrial symbiosis, economic and institutional analysis, organizational studies related to the implementation of industrial ecology, and material choice déterminants; and a Applications and Implementation section with articles describing practices springing from industrial ecological principles, Articles describing government programs and policies that use industrial ecology as a basis for decision making or that facilitate environmentally sound practices relevant to industrial ecology are also sought.
