Publishes descriptions of basic research on microorganisms, including fungi and other unicellular eukaryotic organisms. Topics include structure and function, biochemistry, enzymology, metabolism and its regulation, molecular biology, genetics, plasmids and transposons, general microbiology, applied microbiology, genetic engineering, virology, immunology, clinical microbiology, microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, food microbiology, molecular systematics, chemical or physical haracterization of microbial structures or products, and basic biological properties of organisms.
Manuscripts dealing with simple identification of microorganism(s), cloning of a known gene and its expression in a microbial host, and clinical statistics will not be considered for publication by JM.
It is necessary to provide genome sequencing data with descriptions of novel taxa and determine an overall genome relatedness index, such as average nucleotide identity (ANI), between genomes of the putative new taxon and the closest relatives.
